Foreign Capital Creeping In

A few years ago, I saw news about Japan's vacant houses being bought up by foreign investors. Sudden rent hikes causing disputes. Local realtors told me vacant houses in rural areas are snapped up almost immediately. Apartments turned into overcrowded rooms. Foreigners profiting from the vacant house business. If left unchecked, Japan's landscape will change forever. But too few people are doing anything about it.

The Reality of Having No Money

I'm part of Japan's "ice age generation" — those who entered the workforce during the economic downturn and never quite caught up. Kids' tuition, daily expenses. No savings. I saw the problem clearly, but had no money to act. I kept thinking someone should do something — but never thought that someone could be me.

Acting Anyway

I kept posting on social media, and a company that owned vacant houses reached out: "Want to use one?" They offered to rent it for just the property tax — an unbelievable deal. I discovered you don't have to fix everything. You can start with nothing.

Yoshino, Nara —
A Kominka in Kuzu.

Along the Yoshino River, in Kuzu — a village long known for traditional washi paper making. Surrounded by mountains, this old farmhouse stands quietly, waiting.

外観
廊下

Wooden floors worn by 70 years of life. Windows letting in soft light. The house remains exactly as it was left.

Soft light filtering through shoji screens. The scent of tatami. The warmth of wood. This is Japan's original landscape.

If we prove this works,
more people might follow.

One person can only do so much — but when more people share the same vision, everything changes. OKAERI Project is a real-world experiment: can you tackle Japan's vacant house crisis with zero budget?

01

Starting from Zero

No savings. No loans. Just crowdfunding, creativity, and people. A real experiment.

02

Keep Houses in Local Hands

Before foreign capital takes over, work with locals to find a purpose. One house at a time.

03

Build a Replicable Model

If Nara works, we expand to Ishikawa, Iwate, Niigata. The same framework, applied nationwide.

04

Show Others It's Possible

The ice age generation. People with no money but the will to act. Proving it's possible is the entire point.
